The Hot Springs Area Linux Users Group welcomes you!

Greetings!

Generically speaking, "Linux" is a modern, powerful and cost-free operating system. It generally comes packaged as a "distribution" with many application programs and systems included, also for free. Complete applications like word processors, spreadsheet programs, web browsers, programming languages/compilers, database systems, etc.

Besides all these programs and systems being free of cost ("free as in beer" ), they're also free of encumbrances or limitations ("free as in speech"). The "source code" - the actual listings of programming statements - are included, or available, thus giving Linux and its bundled software the moniker "Open Source." Unlike commercial proprietary software, they also typically have very liberal licenses that place little or no limitations on what one may do with them now, or in the future. ("Give back to those who have given you so much," e.g., the GNU GPL; "do ANYTHING you want with it, just give us authorship credit," e.g., the BSD license.) This includes fixing errors, modifying the program's behavior, and, in most cases, the ability to redistribute/share your custom changes.

So, what is a "Linux Users Group," then? A Linux Users Group, also known as a "LUG," is a group of people with a common interest: Linux. You do not need to be an expert to join, you're welcome even if you're simply curious.

  • Do you have any questions or problems with Linux?
    • Another member may be able to help you!
  • Do you know your way around Linux?
    • Share your knowledge and experience with others!
  • Wondering how to get/install Linux?
    • A LUG member can help!

If you are looking for a Linux Users Group serving the area of Hot Springs, Arkansas, you've found the right place!
